On February 17, 1865, about 30 percent of the city of Columbia, SC was destroyed by flames.  The fires happened during the Civil War and under the direction of the Union troops General William Tecumseh Sherman. 

A park in Columbia that is now known as Finlay Park was reopened in 1990 in honor of the city's Mayor Kirkman Finlay.  The park was called Sidney Park when it first opened in 1859 to honor Algernon Sidney Johnson, a city councilman in Columbia.

Columbia features a number of historic sites and homes, but one that really stands out is the Mann-Simons Cottage.  Still open for tours today, this home is where Celia Mann (former slave and midwife) and her ancestors resided for more than century!

Columbia is home to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, with more than 70 acres of beautiful landscape, interesting animals and a botanical garden!  Approximately one million people visit this zoo each year!  Also in Columbia are the South Carolina State Museum, Fort Jackson, and the Town Theatre (built in 1924).  The  famous band Hootie and the Blowfish had its beginning in Columbia!
