  • 15 Ways to Create Some Extra Holiday Money

    shop-for-holiday-gifts-onlineby Skye Thomas

Originally this was going to be a list for my two teenagers but some of these ideas are better suited to adults with a valid driver's license and a bit of know-how. Some of these take a bit of planning and organizing, but most of them could be done on a fairly spur of the moment case by case basis. The great thing about a lot of these ideas is that you're spreading holiday cheer by helping to make someone else's otherwise stressful and overwhelming to-do list a little bit easier. Who wouldn't pay to have someone come do a few of these things for you? Mostly, what's important is that you remember to provide a quality item or service to the buyer with a smile on your face and in your heart. Have fun with these!

    1. Baby-sit for people who need to do some Christmas shopping without their little ones tagging along. Anyone trustworthy who is over the age of about thirteen or fourteen can do this one. It's hectic enough to get in and out of the malls and shopping centers without having to drag toddlers along. Contact friends, family, coworkers, and members of your spiritual community to let them know that you're available for holiday babysitting. This can include time that the parents need to get away for office parties, charity events, and volunteering to help the elderly and less fortunate members of their community.

    2. Grab a ladder and offer to clean leaves out of your neighbors' gutters. Many people are so busy during the summer months that they completely forget to clean all of the debris from their gutters when the sun is out and it's dry outside. It's cold and yucky outside now and many people are too busy to get to it themselves. They'll probably be glad that you offered and they can check it off of their to-do lists. This isn't one for the younger kids. However, they can offer to rake up the leaves in their neighbors' yards. Adults could offer to do both the gutters and the yard as one big project for a nice reasonable price. It could also be a father ... son side business that you do together - while dad cleans the neighbors gutters, junior rakes up the leaves in the lawn.

    3. Bake something amazing and offer to sell it to your friends and coworkers so they won't have to do their own holiday baking. You probably have to be careful about selling your baked goods to professional organizations and such, but you could do some sideline baking to help out your friends, neighbors, and coworkers who are going to be entertaining guests over the holidays and simply won't have the time to do their own baking. Have you got an awesome recipe that stands out as everyone's absolute favorite? It's the hit of every potluck? Make up some tiny sample sizes or bring it in to the office break room and serve up samples to your potential clients. Then while their mouths are watering, tell them that for a fee you'll bring them one to their home the day before their guests are to arrive. You'll have to work out the scheduling and cost of ingredients and such, but this could be a fun way to make some money and spread some serious joy. The hostess will be so pleased when she pulls your work of art out of the fridge and her guests ooh and ah over the scrumptious homemade dessert she didn't even have to bake herself.

    4. Offer to collect people's empty soda cans and cash them in. My son raised almost $300 last spring doing this so that he could go to a training course to become a camp counselor for the little kids at our church. He went door to door offering to do yard work and most people just handed him bags and bags of pop cans they didn't want to take the time to cash in. He collected most of them over one weekend and then cashed them all in the following weekend. We live really close to a grocery store where he could walk to cash them in, so I didn't even have to get my car dirty with sticky soda drippings! This is a really good one for the younger kids to do.

    5. Sell something on eBay. I know a number of people who make a decent second income all year round by digging around for antiques and such from the Goodwill and then fixing them, cleaning them up, and selling them for a much higher price on eBay. You have to know what to look for, but these folks will pick up an old pair of stereo speakers for $10 or $15 and then sell them on eBay for $200. The customer pays for shipping. You can also do this through garage sales, flea markets, and estate sells too. Most of the time and work goes into hunting for the cool treasures that someone will want to purchase.

    6. Hang up people's outdoor Holiday lights for them. As a single mom, I would have loved it if someone had come to my house and hung the Christmas lights on my house for me. My children always wanted us to decorate the outside of the house and I hated not being able to do that for them. I didn't know the first thing about how to go about hanging them up. I didn't even own a ladder! So, I would think that you could go around offering to hang up people's outdoor holiday lights for a fee. It they are like me and don't even have lights but want to get some, you could offer your expertise as to which kind to buy and where to get the best prices and such.

    7. Grab a broom or a shovel and offer to clean the neighborhood sidewalks. This is another good one for the younger teens. There's always sidewalks that need swept or shoveled. And there's always someone too busy or too tired to do it themselves.

    8. Work a second job as seasonal help at one of the department stores in the mall. Most of the major department stores hire extra help in October or November so they can have them fully trained by the time the really busy holiday shopping season kicks in. They are kept on until after the inventory counts are done in January. Then most are let go if they haven't quit already. Those who have proven themselves to be quality employees will often be asked to stay on longer.

    9. Sell something at holiday bazaars. I suspect that you have to get these kinds of events lined up ahead of time with a bit of preplanning and such, but plenty of folks make a decent seasonal income by selling cool arts and crafts type items at those holiday bazaars. Often a percentage of the sales goes towards a fundraiser, but you still make enough to make it worth your time and energy to create the art and to hang out at the art shows.

    10. Sell your plasma. We all know how important it is to donate blood during the holidays, but many people don't know that you can get paid for sitting through a procedure quite similar to the donation process. The difference is that they run your blood through a machine that separates the plasma from the red blood cells and puts the red blood cells back into your body. It take longer and I guess that's why they are willing to pay you for your time. Years ago, I used to do this when my kids were really little and we needed some extra money for upcoming birthdays and such. They wouldn't let you do it more than once a week or so and they only paid about $25 each time, so you had to plan ahead if you were going to raise $100 or $200 for something you wanted to purchase. Contact your local Red Cross or other blood donation centers for help finding the plasma centers.

    11. Clean houses for others who have holiday guests coming. Typically, if someone has out of town guests coming for the holidays, they have a lot more on their to-do list then just cleaning their toilets and shampooing the carpets. You could become a real lifesaver for those in a crunch who are too busy, too old, or too tired to do a thorough deep cleaning before the guests arrive. Some might even hire you again to clean up after the guests leave too! Teens can do this just as easily as the adults can.

    12. Run errands and do odd holiday jobs like wrapping gifts or delivering packages to the post office. You could start a little side business where all you do is run other people's errands for them. Drop off and pick up the dry cleaning. Take their pet to the vet. Deliver cupcakes to the charity fundraiser. Pick up a handful of gift certificates from national department stores that will later be mailed out. Address and stamp their Christmas cards for them. Do their grocery shopping. Pick up new printer cartridge and some desk calendars for them. It's all of those tiny little errands that make for frazzled schedules and crazy timelines. For a fee, you could do it for them.

    13. Decorate the inside of people's homes or offices for the holidays. You don't have to be a professional interior decorator to be helpful. If you've got a reputation as having a good eye for attractive and festive decorating, you can help others to set up their trees, hang garland, and place some nice poinsettia here and there. You can help make people's homes and their office space a warm inviting environment and also include coming back after the holidays to break it all down into to storage containers as part of the deal. I hate tearing down the decorations and would love to pay someone to put it all back away!

    14. Cater some dinners for the extremely busy shoppers or for Holiday parties. Those who are not awesome cooks need not apply for this one! Let's say that your boss is having the annual company Christmas party at his house and his wife is swamped with running kids back and forth to choir concerts and peewee football camp while shopping and planning for her in-laws who will be flying in to visit only three days after her husband's company party at her house!!! You could offer to cook and cater the event for her. You'd once again be making someone else's holiday season so much easier while earning extra money for yourself. Decide in advance on a menu and who's purchasing the ingredients needed. Then all you have to come up with is a dollar figure for your time and grandma's secret recipe for those little mini-cakes that everyone loves so much.

    15. Chauffer someone's children to and from school and other activities so the parents have some free time. This isn't quite the same as babysitting. You'd be amazed at how much time a person can spend picking up and driving two or three kids to different events and hauling musical instruments and sporting gear from one event to the next. You could simply run a taxi service for children and teenagers who need rides from point A to B. You don't have to hang out and watch them once they get there. Just make sure they arrive on time. Even just having an afternoon at home to cook and clean house while someone else gathers up all of the kids and brings them all home could make a world of difference for someone.

As you can see, some of these services could easily be turned into a year-round side job or they could be dropped as soon as the holidays are over. Perhaps you'll find that you love catering people's meals, you love refurbishing antiques, or you love running errands and taxiing others around from place to place. You could go into business for yourself and by next year, you could quit your 'real job' and be happily self-employed. Then again, your teenager could discover how much time and work it takes just to raise enough money for some generous Christmas shopping. After learning the value of a dollar earned, they might decide that college is a good idea after all!

    Thanksgiving Day Trivia

    When was the first Thanksgiving?

No one can be certain about the date of the first Thanksgiving celebration, but it occurred sometime during the autumn months of 1621.

When did it become a National Holiday?

It wasn't until 1863 that it became a National Holiday, when President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of each November to be a day of Thanksgiving.

When and why was it changed?

In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt changed it to the fourth Thursday of each November, due to the fact that sometimes, there is a fifth Thursday, and that would put Thanksgiving closer to Christmas.

Was turkey really on the menu?

The custom of eating turkey started with the first Thanksgiving dinner, which included wild turkeys. However, other types of meat were also featured, which is not well known.

What other foods were part of the original Thanksgiving dinner?

There was other fowl such as duck or goose, and venison or deer meat. The Pilgrims may also have eaten fish and seafood as well.

In no historic account of Thanksgiving is cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, or yams mentioned. Fresh berries were eaten, but it is unlikely that they were made into sauces since sugar was very limited if available at all. Pumpkins were eaten, even possibly made into custard, but there was no such thing as pie crust or whipped cream at the time. Sweet potatoes were not even known in New England, and as stated, sugar was not readily available. These items became popular later, and eventually became part of the Thanksgiving tradition.

How to Write a Holiday Newsletter, The Personal Side of Christmas

buy gift baskets nowShop online at the office or shop at "Ho-Ho" home in your underwear. Find a holiday gift for him, her, kids and new babies.

Christmas is a wonderful time of year. For some it is very religious. For others it is filled with magic. For many, however, Christmas can be filled with tension and anxiety. The shopping at the Malls can be absolutely exhausting. Writing Christmas cards to people we can barely remember often seems like a drudge. And the Newsletter? What do I say?

Do you find yourself dreading the Christmas season? Does the thought of shopping for cards and sending handwritten messages make your hands sweat? How does one keep things personal, without getting writer's cramp? What do you say to each and every recipient in every single card? Perhaps now is the time to organize your thoughts, and keep in touch through a Christmas Newsletter.

A Christmas Newsletter can be a wonderful experience, and it is a way for others to know what is happening in your life, and in the lives of your family. However, a Christmas Newsletter can also embrace the recipients, as you include your feelings about them. This can be generalized, yet still remain personal. You don't have to give names or try to fit too much on one page. Here are some basic rules for writing a newsletter:

    • Be brief. For a Christmas Newsletter to be welcome, you don't want to bore people with pages and pages. Stick to one page of information. If you want to include pictures, keep the Newsletter to two pages. If you find yourself going on and on, remember, a good edit is a writer's best friend.
    • Be humble. "Look what I did!" or "Look how smart my kids are" is bragging, and no one likes a braggart. Celebrate your life with thanksgiving. Remember for every success, there has been someone along the way who has encouraged and inspired you. You couldn't have done it without them. Say so. Some good examples of a thankful message might be: "I feel blessed to have received a promotion." Or "thankfully, Johnnie has successfully completed his first semester at college."
    • Include the reader. Yes you can do that without mentioning names. For example, "it is so wonderful to have the family gathered together again. Wish you were here." Another inclusive example could be: "It's great to have our family gathered; however Christmas is not the same without you." Nothing warms the heart of your reader like knowing he or she is missed.
    • Get in touch with your feelings. Think about each person who has blessed your life. If they have not been a blessing, then why are you including them? Do not stir the pot of discontent. I'm a firm believer that Newsletters should be sent only to those who mean something to you or perhaps to someone who really needs a friend.
    • Include a brief personal message. Nothing says "I care about you," quite like something personal. Write in pen, at the top, "John" or "Dear Sara." And at the end include a personal line, such as, "John, I miss you, especially at Christmas," or "Sara, I still have that lovely needlepoint you gave to me. I miss you more than ever."

Few people enjoy the expensive Christmas card with a typed signature, even if it is printed in gold. A Christmas Newsletter needs to be an invitation of two hearts to be joined as one. So give it all you've got, and do some planning. This is your opportunity to share a blessed celebration of the year. Don't let time and distance stand in your way.

9 Tips for Starting a Successful Gift Basket Business

Like to create? Then a gift-basket service is the perfect homebased business for you. In today’s fast-paced world, few people have time to find that gift that’s just right. Both corporate customers and individuals have found gift baskets to be the ideal solution, creating a rapidly growing market that could mean big profits for you.

Start-up is easy. There are few equipment requirements, and no need for a retail store, so a home site is ideal. You can work part or full time. And you set your own hours and workload.

Best of all, gift baskets are fun to create and practically sell themselves. The gift basket business is ideal as a homebased business. Learn how to take your business online.

Having a home-based business is never easy. From advertising to zoning, there is always something that will require your attention. I get asked a lot of questions from people who are just starting up so I thought I'd put together a quick 10 point list of tips. These are ten tips to help keep you focused on your quest to make your home-based gift basket business a success.

    1. Set a schedule and keep it.
The allure of working from home is powerful -- but so is the appeal of spending more time with your family or taking a nap in the middle of the day. Set a schedule for your workday and sticking to it is critical.

Q: Does your schedule have equal portions of "working IN your business" and "working ON your business"?

    2. Set up a dedicated office area. You can't effectively run a business from your kitchen table. A successful business requires a fully equipped home office. If you have an extra bedroom, consider converting it into office space. If you do not have an extra room in your home, try setting up a partition to create an office area. Q: Is your work space creating a relaxed, energetic area from you to work from, or is it Clutter-city USA ?

    3. Be professional. One of the perks of running a business from home is having the option of working in your pajamas, but your customers should not be able to tell that you just rolled out of bed. Maintain normal office hours and a professional demeanor when answering your phone or dealing with customers. Q: Are you answering your phone with a well scripted greeting for your business?

    4. Advertise. Just because "if you build it" doesn't necessarily mean they will come. To succeed, you will need to advertise your new business. Advertising and marketing doesn't have to be expensive, but they have to be done. Best places to advertise are highly targeted people or business, like Corporate Business, Women Magazine, Family magazines or local newspapers.

Q: Does your advertising focus on YOU or on the solution your prospective
    customers are looking for?

    5. Familiarize yourself with tax laws. You are about to enter a whole new world of taxation. To avoid ending up frazzled on April 15th, take the time now to discuss your options with your accountant or another qualified professional who can advise you about your tax situation. Q: Do you have an effective process for keeping up with your tax obligations on a monthly basis?

    6. Create a business plan. Where do you want your business to be in six months? How about in five years? Many Gift basket business owners mistakenly think that a business plan is only necessary if they are going to have to get a loan. But businesses of all sizes can use a business/marketing plan as a roadmap to success.

Q: Have you updated your business plan with your goals for the next 90 days?

    7. Get on the Web. The Internet is the single best way for your business to reach out to prospective customers. Even if your business isn't "e-" anything, you need to be on the web with a website that can function as an online brochure or, even easier, join the website for great exposure. Q: Have you purchased your business name as a dot com domain? Q: Have you joined gbexchange?

    8. Do your research. You may think that your idea for your entertainment business is unique. But unless you do some market research, you won't know whether or not your area is already saturated. Market research can help you find a special angle for your service, giving you an edge over your competitors. Q: Have you developed a USP (unique selling proposition)?

    9. Don't get discouraged. Many businesses fail simply because their owners got discouraged after a disappointing trial period. You will have toshow grit and determination to make your business succeed. Hang in there and do all that you can to make your business the success you know it can be. Q: Don't be a Lone Ranger...even the Lone Ranger had Tonto! Do you have a business coach?

  • Gifts, How To Give That Special Someone The Gift Of A Lifetime.

How to Give the "Gift of a Lifetime" Giving that special someone a special gift can be very difficult. Depending on the situation and occasion, it can be a very tricky thing. You want to do the right thing, but if you’re not careful, it can backfire. As many have found out, you need to give this some considerable thought.

But everyone wants to give the "right" gift. What makes up a great gift? In my experience, a great gift:

  • Is truly unique, personal and creative;
  • Demonstrates to the recipient the thoughtfulness and caring that went into securing the gift;
  • Evokes emotions from the recipient whenever it is used, seen or thought about; and
  • Makes the recipient truly feel special.

A great gift doesn't necessarily have to cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to be great. But also understand that getting a gift that is cheap can show how much "you don't care." Before you start to shop and buy, also consider the following:

    1. Who is the recipient? Is it your spouse, significant other, sibling, parents, relative, close friends, neighbor or business associate?

    2. Next, what is the occasion? Holiday, birthday, anniversary, graduation, wedding, engagement, promotion, a "just because" occasion, or "I-need-to-get-out-of- the-doghouse-occasion?"

    3. Be yourself. The gift is from you, so make sure it shows it. But be appropriate, and be sure the gift is something that the recipient will relate to and enjoy.

    4. Try to avoid excessiveness. Simple gifts tend to also be very well received.

    5. Don't wait until the last minute. It only gives you too little time to get a great gift, and also shows how much you don't care.

Being creative is a fantastic way to ensure getting the right gift. People love it when it's obvious their gift required some imagination and creativity. So as you’re going through the “what do I get them” process, remember that a little bit of creativity, uniqueness and personalization will go a long, long way!

The true measure of a great gift will be seen in the eyes of the recipient when they get it. You’ll know it, you’ll feel it, and you’ll feel great yourself when you’ve given the “Great Gift”! by: Van Day, a renowned pianist and musician, and creator of “Piano Music 4".

Gift Baskets With International Appeal, Great Fun To Put Together

Whether you need a gift for a special traveler, a friend interested in various cultures or someone of a particular ethnicity, you can tailor a gift basket to represent a particular country or world region.  It allows the giver to be both creative and thoughtful—such baskets are also great fun to put together as you may want to hunt for particular items to suit your needs.  The following article suggests some wonderful ways to create gift baskets with international sensibilities and charm.

Russia offers a wide array of items that represent its wonderfully colorful history and various cultures.  When designing a gift basket for a friend with Russian heritage or interests consider a large peasant-style basket beset with a layer of Russian embroidery or a large piece of canvas on which you trace a map of Russia denoting various cities and landmarks.  Then, fill your basket with items like freshly baked brown bread, a small decorative lacquered box, a set of Martryoshka dolls, a small bottle of good vodka and you have a memorable gift with Russian appeal.

Know someone who loves Chinese food?  Consider a starting with a bamboo or large reed-woven basket and fill with a small wok, wok oil, chopsticks, a Chinese cookbook, various bottles of Oriental sauces and a gift certificate to a local or online Chinese cooking specialty store.  Top off with a bag of fortune cookies and a copy of Pearl S. Buck’s Nobel Prize winning book The Good Earth.

Many women would adore a touch of France with their gift.  A romantic French gift basket could employ a vintage suitcase marked with French luggage labels to replace the traditional basket.  Then, pack up a new nightgown with a French tag, an exquisite bottle of French perfume such as Balle a Versailles or the classic Chanel Number Five.  You may want to include a book about French Fashion and if it’s a special anniversary gift, slip a pair of round-trip tickets to Paris into a new Pierre Cardin evening bag.

An Italian gift basket will have little trouble filling itself with items like pizza stones, Murano glass candy, a Venetian filigree vase, a Tuscan-inspired cookbook, a book about ancient Rome, various bottles of spices imported from Italy, a set of note cards depicting various Florentine artists, and so forth.  Italy is a culturally rich nation famous for so many things.  Your basket may represent Italy’s art, cuisine, history, etc…

How about a basket with Egyptian appeal?  Fill a large basket with decorative Egyptian papyrus, a jackal-headed pen-knife, a book about Egyptian archaeology or hieroglyphics, a carved scarab made from lapis lazuli, glass crocodile paperweight, a tin of figs or dates, small statue of Cleopatra, sphinx bookends and so forth.  Alternative books might cover topics like the pyramids, pharaohs, the famous lighthouse or library or Alexandra, Egyptian flora or ancient Egyptian society.

Or, your gift basket may exhibit southwestern gift basket Native American appeal.  Line a basket with a small woven blanket in the Pueblo or Navaho style.  Then, fill with a Kachina doll, prickly pear tea, decorative stones denoting various animals, beaded necklace, a turquoise-studded belt or bracelet, a book about Anasazi culture, a teepee-shaped candle holder, etc…

An English basket will provide considerable charm.  Fill with a small big-Ben replicated desk clock, English toffee, Earl Gray tea, a Victorian stationary set, a biography of Shakespeare or the Bronte sisters, a set of postcards of English landmarks, and possibly some examples of decorative fine English bone china.

Alternatively, your gift basket may be continental in nature.  Fill with various famous offerings from states like Texas chili mix, Louisiana hot sauce, and Virginia ham.  Or, go with an Africa-inspired basket—a book about the Maori, a Moroccan tapestry, a video about the breaching Great Whites of South Africa, etc…

An alternative to focusing on one country could be to focus on a particular item like chocolate or tea and fill your baskets with examples from various countries.  For chocolate, fill your basket with Mexican cocoa, dark chocolate candy bars from Switzerland and German chocolate cake on a platter decorated with vintage chocolate adds.  Other items available with international stamps include candy, costume jewelry, music, films, books, dolls and so forth.

    The Selfish Act Of Giving

Traditional knowledge tells us the business of gift giving and receiving is built around the old adage, "It's better to give than to receive." As a society of giving people we want to make an acknowledgment to the people in our life of what the relationship means to us, but the act isn't nearly as selfless as it seems.

At first thought giving a gift seems like a selfless act, but once you follow all the thoughts involved, it isn't really selfless after all. There is something you are hoping to gain from it, so it can't be completely selfless. You're doing it so that you will feel good about yourself. Seeing that look on the recipient's face, the immediate knowledge that they've been waiting for this gift or are truly surprised by it, is what we're waiting for. This becomes a gift to ourselves.

When I shop for a gift for someone I try to to find something that let's them know how I connect to them, a symbol of our relationship. This is something they can look back on and say, "Laura really knows me and appreciates the fact that we have this in common." Conversely, it's great to be on the other end and realize your friend or family member cares about you so much that they took the time to find this unique item that you both enjoy. It's a personalized gift that you know was bought just for you.

Often it doesn't even have to be a material gift; an act can mean all the same things. A friend recently had told me no one understood what she wanted on her birthday. She was always cooking dinner for everyone else on their birthday and was hoping someone would finally do it for her. She told her family that's what she wanted most. Yet everyone totally misread what she was looking for and took her out to dinner. While she had a nice dinner and enjoyed their company, it wasn't what she was looking for.

My friend was looking for someone to say I'm listening to what you want. She was looking for someone to put as much into a gift for her as she does for them. I wanted her to know that I was listening and that there was someone out there that truly understood her. I showed up on her doorstep the day of her birthday with a pan of mostaccioli, garlic bread, salad, salad dressing and a bottle of wine. She had told me eating my mostaccioli one time earlier that I could make it for her any time.

The joy on my friend's face was what I was looking and hoping for. She was excited, not that she didn't have to cook dinner for herself, but that someone was willing to make that effort for her. She was also now secure with the knowledge that there was someone out there that understood what she wanted and that truly listened. She told me later that she had told everyone she knew that I had done that for her. She wanted others to know that we were able to connect in that way.

I try to do this for all the gifts I give on Christmas, but the process can sometimes be daunting. We get so busy at that time of the year, and depending on how many people are on a gift list, finding a personalized gift for each person can be time-consuming. Usually some end up being very personalized, some just something I hope the person will enjoy.

But there's always that one gift. There's always that one gift every year I just can't wait until it is opened. This is the one gift I have found that I know will show that I understand and listen. Seeing the look from the recipient of acknowledgment of our relationship and of what I put into finding that particular item is all I need to make the gift worth every penny and every moment that was put into it.

Sure, I enjoy when the same is done for me. I enjoy knowing that someone understands and listens to me as well, but I don't get the same sense of accomplishment when the situation is in reverse. I don't get to pat myself on the back for a job well done. I don't get the validation.

What it comes down to is I'm looking to please myself when I give a great gift. I'm looking to say I set out to do this and accomplished it. I set out to find the perfect gift to show someone I understand and care. It is not at all selfless. I did it for myself in the end run. It is better to give than to receive, and that is because when giving, we're still receiving.

Best Gifts For Women, Understanding Her Desires

There is but one universal truth about those of the fairer sex:" Women Love Gifts".

So, all women love gifts... a guy doesn't have to be a genius to grasp that concept. Or does he?

Many of the collective complaints about gifts from men to women are that the men often don't remember important dates, don't pay attention to the nuances of a woman's life and don't know what she prefers most or cares for the least.

Most of her best gifts, are not the most expensive or glittery. They are often romantic gifts that are well thought out, affordable, considerate and timely.

Women adore gifts that reflect the love of the giver and his explicit understanding of her desires and tastes without which no self-respecting man would ever set sail on the sea of relationships.

Comforting Those You Love During Their Darkest Days

fresh-fruit-basket-deliveryAs friends, relatives or others who care, there is nothing more difficult then watching those we care about endure pain—especially the pain that comes from unexpected tragedy. As a society who is untrained in how to help, we may feel confused or unsure of how to best support those we care for. The following guidelines can help you support your loved one during dark times.

Don’t try to find the magic words or formula to eliminate the pain. Nothing can erase or minimize the painful tragedy your friend or loved one is facing. Your primary role at this time is simply to “be there.” Don’t worry about what to say or do, just be a presence that the person can lean on when needed.

Don’t try to minimize or make the person feel better. When we care about someone, we hate to see them in pain. Often we’ll say things like, “I know how you feel,” or “perhaps, it was for the best,” in order to minimize their hurt. While this can work in some instances, it never works with grief.

Help with responsibilities. Even though a life has stopped, life doesn’t. One of the best ways to help is to run errands, prepare food, take care of the kids, do laundry and help with the simplest of maintenance.

Don’t expect the person to reach out to you. Many people say, “call me if there is anything I can do.” At this stage, the person who is grieving will be overwhelmed at the simple thought of picking up a phone. If you are close to this person, simply stop over and begin to help. People need this but don’t think to ask.

Talk through decisions. While working through the grief process many bereaved people report difficulty with decision making. Be a sounding board for your friend or loved one and help them think through decisions.

Don’t be afraid to say the name of the deceased. Those who have lost someone usually speak of them often, and believe it or not, need to hear the deceased’s name and stories. In fact, many grievers welcome this.

Remember that time does not heal all wounds. Your friend or loved one will change because of what has happened. Everyone grieves differently. Some will be “fine” and then experience deep grief a year later, others grieve immediately. There are no timetables, no rules—be patient.

Remind the bereaved to take care of themselves. Eating, resting and self-care are all difficult tasks when besieged by the taxing emotions of grief. You can help by keeping the house stocked with healthy foods that are already prepared or easy-to-prepare. Help with the laundry. Take over some errands so the bereaved can rest. However, do not push the bereaved to do things they may not be ready for. Many grievers say, “I wish they would just follow my lead.” While it may be upsetting to see the bereaved withdrawing from people and activities—it is normal. They will rejoin as they are ready.

Avoid judging. Don’t tell people how to react or handle their emotions. Simply let them know that you will help in any way possible.

Share a Meal. Invite the bereaved over regularly to share a meal or take a meal to their home since meal times can be especially lonely. Consider inviting the bereaved out on important dates like the one-month anniversary of the death, the deceased’s birthday, etc.

Make a list of everything that needs to be done with the bereaved. This could include everything from bill paying to plant watering. Prioritize these by importance. Help the bereaved complete as many tasks as possible. If there are many responsibilities, find one or more additional friends to support you.

Make a personal commitment to help the one grieving get through this. After a death, many friendships change or disintegrate. People don’t know how to relate to the one who is grieving, or they get tired of being around someone who is sad. Vow to see your friend or loved one through this, to be an anchor in their darkest hour.

Spectacular Summer Gift Ideas, Barbecue, Picnic, Grilling, Sports, Family Fun Summertime Gifts

wc-hot-off-grillFavorite Summertime Gifts - Summer is a spectacular time for gift-giving with its bounty of blooms and outdoor parties and picnics. Whether you are shopping for a summer birthday, wedding or special event, summertime calls for some sizzling seasonal faire. The following article offers some great ideas for gifts with summertime appeal.

While it’s usually commonplace to bring a gift of this or that for your host or hostess, consider a basket full of fresh fruit to bring to the next barbeque or backyard party. If it’s a fourth of July party, consider a decorative tray of fruit designed like the American flag. Fruit can also be a great garnish to other gifts. For example, pair a set of strawberry clad dishes with a bowl of what else? Fresh strawberries!

Plants are another traditional gift that shouts summer. A pleasant summery housewarming gift might be a large watering can containing a fern or some trailing ivy. Any decorative planter filled with your plant of choice makes a wonderful all-purpose gift. A wonderful garden gift basket for a gardening enthusiast would be to buy a large terra cotta planter and fill it with new gardening gloves, a new gardening book, seed packets, bulbs, a small decorative container, small statuary like a bunny or frog and a small garden implement or two.

Since summer is a hot season, consider gifts with a cooling effect. An iced tea maker with a supply of peach and raspberry teas makes an excellent summer gift. Consider filling a new ice bucket with ice tongs, ice treats or even a gift certificate to the local ice cream parlor. Likewise, a homemade ice cream maker and recipe book makes a great summertime gift. Other cool gifts might include a hammock, turbo fan, snow-cone maker, beach passes, etc…

As many people like to spend plenty of their summer outdoors, patio furniture or accents make fine gifts during the summer as well. A new patio umbrella, glider, new cushions, canvas folding chairs, bench, plant stand are items to consider. Other great accent gifts might include a tabletop fountain, wind chimes, a gazing ball, grill implements, grilling cookbook, outdoor lanterns, set of colorful plastic bowls, a decorative glass pitcher (filled with lemons and limes), food nets, colorful placemats and plastic dinnerware for patio dining, decorative baskets filled with fresh herbs and dried fragrant plants like lavender, etc…

As summer is also the perfect time for leisure and relaxation, always consider the gift of a new book—Caribbean Island cuisine or new mystery set in the steamy tropics. Beach gear is an appropriate summer gift—a badminton set, beach umbrella, beach bag, beach blanket, cooler stuffed with flip-flops, paperback book, beach towel are all delightful hot weather accompaniments.

Other terrific summertime gifts include: tickets to a summer movie blockbuster, designer sunglasses, picnic basket, iced tea glasses and stirrers, sun dress, wide brim hats, colorful tablecloths, salad bowls, tickets to a water park, camping items, summer sporting gifts and gear, vases, yard ornaments, garden props and so much more! You can also try to choose gifts in summer colors like ocean blue, bright yellows, pinks, peaches and especially white.

If you are giving a gift that does not have special summertime appeal, consider a small accent gift to go along with it that is more seasonal in nature. Items like colored sand bottles, palm-size sand castles, water-colored glass pebbles, single blooms in a bud vase, even a bookmark of pressed flowers can add just a hint of summer style to make your gift all the more memorable.

Giving gifts with summertime appeal makes the season all the more enjoyable for your recipient. Some items may only be available seasonally so they shop early for the greatest selection.

A puppy chases its tail. A kitten pursues a ball of string. A young frog leaps from lily pad to lily pad. In just about every animal species, play is universal.

Indeed, children of every culture, from every corner of the globe, engage in play -- from the African boy who makes music with a hand-carved plaything, to the North American girl who cuddles a store-bought teddy bear. And while there never has been a greater array of toys available than today, anthropologists have found evidence of toys dating as far back as there is record of human life. Though play differs from species to species, culture to culture, generation to generation, it is clearly an instinctual, essential part of growing up.

While play has existed since ancient times, only recently have we come to appreciate its importance to a child's development. Too often, we dismiss playtime as simply entertainment for our children. Yet, experts consider play to be a child's work. Truly, there is no more constructive pastime for a child. While play is the essential joy of youth, it is also the primary way in which children learn about themselves, others and their world. Through play, children develop to physical, mental, social, emotional and creative skills needed for life.

Given the many benefits of play, parents and caregivers naturally want to make the most of it for their children - to choose appropriate books and toys, encourage positive play experiences and, above all, ensure safe play.

Send fun gift baskets filled with fun toys, snacks, candy, books, games, puzzles and tasty treats and goodies guaranteed to delight any child. Buy kids special gifts just because they're special kids!

Real Estate Closing Gifts; Extreme Marketing Tips That Breed Referrals & Sales, Better Than Thank You Notes

real-estate-closing-gift-ideasReal estate agents, property managers, brokers and developers - this warning is for you!

It's not a warning of danger to come, but of missed opportunities for future sales; opportunities you can't afford to miss.

Whether selling a home, building a new construction or renting an apartment to tenants, it always feels great when you close a sale.  You've worked with the client to reach a successful end. However, when you do make a sale, don't sit back and relax. Go the extra mile and give your client or tenant a real estate closing gift such as a "New Home" gift basket or other useful gift.

    Better than "Thank You" Notes

Sending a "thank you" note is great.  Many companies do this to show appreciation, and it's certainly better than sending nothing at all.  But, imagine how your client will feel if a unique gift is special delivered to their home. You can still send the note of thanks, but send it along with something useful.  This is what closing gifts are all about - a way to say "thanks" and be remembered for years to come.

Who Else Gets a Real Estate Closing Gift?

Clients aren't the only ones who should receive closing gifts from your company.  You should also consider all those you've worked with throughout the sales or rental process.  There are closing lawyers, lending institutions, mortgage companies, home improvement specialists, appraisers, insurance agents, housekeepers, etc.  All those who contribute to making your real estate sales possible should receive a closing gift from you.  Also, don't forget to send a gift to those who refer others to you!

Marketing Benefits of Real Estate Closing Gifts

The benefits of giving closing gifts are tremendous.  One reason you'll want to make this a normal practice is it will increase your real estate referrals dramatically.  Imagine the increase in leads of potential buyers and sellers if you suddenly have everyone you work with referring you sincerely to others!

*The client refers you because the purchase went smoothly AND they received a lovely closing gift from you.

*The closing attorney works with many people in real estate, even potential real estate buyers or sellers.  You're the real estate agent who stands out because you show such appreciation for the attorney.

*The person who cleans the homes or apartments for you may have family and friends who are interested in buying, selling or renting a home.

*The home improvement specialist makes repairs for you, and also for others who might be getting ready to sell their home.  Because of your thoughtfulness, you always come to mind when real estate conversations arise.

Another benefit is the potential of repeat business when your clients get ready to buy, sell, build or rent again.  How you treat clients during and after the sale will make an everlasting impression.  A closing gift makes the final impression.

More Benefits for Rental Property Managers

If you're a rental property owner or manager, giving a housewarming gift basket to a tenant is a great way to say "thank you" and to let them know you'll be there when they need you.  This helps with both new tenant referrals and resident retention. You can also give gifts to those who work with you to clean or repair the rental property.  Your thoughtfulness will go a long way.

With all the legal restrictions of marketing a real estate agency, you can't afford to miss this amazing opportunity.  Closing gifts can be an effective tool in building a solid foundation for your business!

And, since no box should remain empty, consider filling your trinket box with: a vintage handkerchief, hand-written poem, piece of Venetian glass candy, charm, tiny perfume bottle, beaded keychain, decorative pin, painted thimble, small mirror or gourmet chocolates!

Kitchen items can make sweet gifts as well. Egg cups are not widely used these days, but a pair of them (which you hand-paint) or have been purchased from the local antique store can be perfect items for the person who has almost everything. Also, a handsome coffee gift or pretty china teacup and saucer are excellent gifts that appeal to most people in general. Fill with a sample of coffee or tea, candied swizzle sticks, antique teaspoon, tea infuser, special sugars, etc…If you know someone who enjoys baking, consider a few unique cookie cutters wrapped in a decorative hand towel. Interesting or personalized kitchen magnets are also thoughtful touches.

Books may come in small sizes and keeping a collection of gift-books on hand for both adults and children is a nice way to show your appreciation. Cookbooks, picture books or gardening books purchased on clearance racks can be stored easily until you find its recipient. A small antique book of pressed flowers given with that teacup and saucer is a special way of saying you care about someone. Blank journals or diaries also make wonderful gifts that are suitable to a wide variety of people. They can be purchased, or, if you are crafty, consider covering one your self to suit someone special or cover a photo album to give to the prospective mother or bride.

Catering to someone else’s craftiness is also a clever way to acknowledge their talents and interests. For the sewer, grab a basket and load it with ribbons, buttons, fabric scraps and the like that you pick up throughout the year. Scrapbookers will appreciate decorative papers, pens and stickers. Any crafter may benefit from a newly published book on their craft topic filled with jewelry making, quilt or knitting ideas. For men often a new tool wrapped with a ribbon is a nice way to think of them too!

Other small gifts to keep on hand could include decorative fan pulls, homemade stationary, tins (to fill with anything from postcards to cookies), candles, decoupaged eggs, linen sachets, a hand painted tile, lace doilies, embroidered pillowcases, bud vases, glass flowers, colored pencil set, beaded change purse, small garden pot filled with seed packs or bulbs, etc…

Giving gifts is a wonderful and kind way to demonstrate your care of someone special. Be creative and always try to tailor your gift to the special person's interests or taste.
